The One Hand strategy

Many adults ask a lot of questions and give a high number of commands to children.

I developed The One Hand strategy so that parents and teachers can easily monitor themselves, using their fingers and thumb to make statements (four fingers) before asking a question (using the thumb).

In this way parents and teachers are able to "feed-in" language before children are expected to answer the question. It enables children to process information about a topic before being asked an open ended question which helps to develop oral language confidence.

This simple strategy has been incorporated into much of my work and programmes.
